the greatest gift

This is something I was thinking about today:

Spending time with family, decorating the house, listening to Christmas music, getting a break from school, making & eating delicious treats, and giving and receiving gifts are things that make Christmas wonderful and something to look forward to each year. But sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that even though these things are so lovely, it's certainly not what Christmas is really all about. Christmas is a celebration of the incredible fact that Jesus came down to earth to save lost sinners. Christmas is about that one gift - the most amazing and inexpressible gift ever given.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." (I Timothy 1:15)

"And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."
(Luke 2:10-11)

Salvation. Undeserved grace and mercy. Forgiveness of sins. Jesus coming into the world to die on the cross, taking the punishment that we fully deserved.

That's the Greatest Gift. That's what I want to keep in mind this Christmas - and all the time.
