16 Curly Hair Problems

Curly-headed girls often get this said to them:

"Wow! You're so lucky! Some people spend a hundred dollars on a perm to get curly hair like that - and you get it for free!"

But curly-headed girls know that this is very, very false. Because no, curls are not free.

Curls come at a very big price.

Whether you're a curly girl yourself, or whether you are simply interested in finding out what it's like to be one of us, I hope you enjoy this list of the many woes of having curls.

Note: Not all of these will be relatable to everyone, as these are just the problems I myself have faced.

1. You wake up every morning looking like a curly-haired monster.

2. Your curls can not be tamed. No matter what products you use, no matter how expensive your bottle of shampoo was - your curls do what they want.

3. You sometimes find bobby pins in your hair while shampooing it.

4. You get called cruel nicknames. My brother occasionally calls me Weird Al.

5. One word: Humidity. No no no no.

6. If you want to straighten your hair, it takes hours. ...and it only lasts a few hours before it starts curling again.

7. Limited hairstyle options. Can't do no milkmaid braid, yo.

8. You vaguely resemble Mia Thermopolis...before her makeover.

9. Messy buns are your best friends. Because at least you meant for it to look messy.

10. You go through more conditioner in a week than most people go through in a month.

11. You refuse to leave the house without a hair tie.

12. You envy girls who are able to keep their curls under control. MUST BE SORCERY!

13. You find twigs and leaves in your hair after a walk in the woods.

14. You receive shocked looks from people after telling them that you don't brush your hair. "Trust me, it would make things worse."

15. When you pluck up the courage to actually wear your hair down for once, you step outside and the wind makes it look like a tumbleweed. Well, good thing I brought a hair tie...

16. Hairstylists don't know how to deal with you.

It's a tough life, that's for sure. But in all seriousness, having curly hair can be cool sometimes. I mean, if I ever want to cosplay Merida, I don't have to buy a wig! #win #curlyhairdontcare

love,
Hannah

  1. Ahahaha! This is too perfect! And your GIFs! xD Love this.

"One word: Humidity." GAH! 'Nuff said. That one explains itself.

While my hair stays more on the wavy side, I can totally relate to the windy tumbleweed look. Especially when it's only certain pieces that stick out! Needless to say, I seem to prefer it straightened... :]

    Great post, girl!

  2. YES, YES, YES to all of these. Hair ties are a must and humidity is THE WORST EVER. Yeah, I never brush my hair. And messy buns are my best friends. Last time I went to the hair dresser the lady said, "Oh. Your hair has a mind of its own, doesn't it?" Ugh. Tell me about! =)

  3. This is so funny! !!! Gif usage = win. Confession: my hair is naturally straight, but I've always wished for curls...

  4. This post is hilarious! I suffer from all of these! Except that my hair is too measly and thin to lose bobby pins in it. Plus sometimes I wake up and my hair is dead-against-the-scalp flat and even a messy bun can't hide the fact that it has no volume. So basically I fluctuate between flat hair and fluffy poof hair. It's just the worst of both 0.o

  5. This made me laugh. :) I have straight hair... sometimes I wistfully long for a little bit of a curl, but, hey, I guess the takehome message is to be thankful for what God gave us, and then to laugh the rest away. :) ♥

  6. Great post. I'm one of those straight haired girls who has always longed for curls. The older I have gotten the more I realize that despite the absolute gorgeousness that is curly hair, I am sure I would not be able to take care of it correctly. Still - your hair is gorgeous and I kinda envy you : )

  7. I wish to have curly hair. I have natural wavy hair, so I am in the middle of straight and curly... but being like Mia Thermopolis before her makeover? Gosh! Struggles!

    xoxo Morning

  8. This is perfect :') i have issues with my thick hair (like your limited options with curly hair, high ponytails are impossible for me because they end up sagging) and I have a tendency to break combs like Princess Mia.

I personally like the sound of curly hair, with or without its woes :)

  9. Apsolutely loved the gifs! Your blog is so awesome! Please visit my blog. My hair has tight curls but when I braid it and leave it like that for long then take it out, it turns quite wavy and curly hahahaha

  10. Ha, so true! In middle school I tediously straightened my hair every day, only to have my curls reemerging by lunchtime. Finally I just gave up and embraced my curly hair, which means realizing that it's going to do whatever it wants to do.

Humidity is awful (and summer in Virginia is nothing but humid), I go through a ridiculous amount of conditioner, and the only time I brush my hair is to get the tangles out before I wash it, because if I brush it otherwise I look like one of the guys from Lynyrd Skynryrd (which isn't a look I'm going for). Unfortunately hair ties don't do me much good because somehow my hair manages to get more tangled in a pony tail than when it's down.

The similarities between me and Mia Thermopolis are endless...except for the princess thing and the Michael Moscovitz thing (alas!). When I hear my hair clip snapping or feel my comb break, at least it makes me smile to think of: "You broke my brush" (in Paolo's accent).

    Awesome post! :)

  15. I can get minor curls/waves if I keep my hair short and actually DO it. Unfortunately, I never do it. Pony tail is the only way for me. I'm endlessly jealous of curly hair but I KNOW IT IS NOT ALL SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS. *nods*

  16. This. Is. So. Perfect.
Everything's right on! Especially the conditioner.I've actually stopped ever shampooing my hair. It's happier this way. *tosses hair dramatically over shoulder*

I actually keep a length of ribbon with me to keep my mane under control, once a hair tie goes in...it never comes out.

  17. I have... oh I don't know! Sometimes it's curly, though not curly-curly, sometimes it's straight, sometimes it's frizzy. My hair has not yet found it's one place to settle. You'd think it would, but no, apparently not. It's actually amusing to see my fringe struggle to perform otherworldly tasks on a daily. It has, amazingly, worked out how to produce individual ringlets...?!

I have always wanted curly hair, though! Which is pretty funny, seeing as I have so many problems with my hair as it is already. I wake up with the Anna look most of the time.

  18. Cute post, Hannah. I have straight hair but having curly hair does sound like it might be frustrating! With that in mind though, I also thought of this when I read your post.

  20. Yeah I completely agree with you. My sister has naturally straight her and I think she loves curls. She bought recently most expensive and best curling iron out there in the market and keep curling her hair quite frequently and I think how she manages herself.
